Sugary Drinking is Linked with Depression | But Not How You Think
The average health geek would probably tell you that sugary soft drinks imposes their damage by placing and exorbitant amount of metabolic stress on the body. So much so, that they eventually drive cellular dysfunction, chronic inflammation and ultimately impair critical tissue like the energy hungry Brain, explaining how & why excess sugar influences mental disorders like depression.
And to be honest, their story would check out. Because it’s been shown over-and-over that chronically high blood sugar, along with high diet-derived spikes, is bad for biologically business. One of the reason being its inflammatory promoting effects, often driven by a combination of dysfunctional metabolism (i.e leaky mitochondria) and impaired anti-inflammatory activity (i.e autophagy, glymphatic activation, anti-inflammatory compounds). Especially when it comes to the Brain.
However, what most health nerds may not realize, is that in order to have optimal metabolic function and up-regulation of anti-inflammatory pathways, you need a balanced, prosperous, thriving gut microbiome. Something that boatloads of sugar ALSO disrupts.
Which makes it not so much of a surprise that this sugary-depression connection tracks back to some troublemaking species of bacteria in the gut as well. Here’s why drinking your sugar creates a perfect storm of dysfunction and how you can start kicking your habit.
